It is the oldest square in the city and one of the most beautiful in Italy. Although the buildings surrounding it are from different eras, the square boasts an incredible harmony. To the south and east there are medieval buildings (Palazzo Tofani, Torre dei Làppoli), to the north there is a sixteenth-century palace with a Vasari loggia, to the west the parish church of Santa Maria, the Palazzo del Tribunale and the fifteenth-century Palazzo della Fraternita dei Laici. Piazza Grande, made famous throughout the world also by the film "Life is Beautiful" by Roberto Benigni, is, twice a year, the setting for the traditional "Giostra del Saracino". In addition, every first Sunday of the month and the preceding Saturday, the Antiques Fair is also held here.
