Gaio Cilnio Mecenate National Archaeological Museum. The treasures of Etruscan and Roman Arezzo on display

To discover Etruscan and Roman Arezzo there is the Gaio Cilnio Mecenate National Archaeological Museum. It is the most important archaeological museum in Tuscany after the one in Florence and, together with the Roman Amphitheatre of Arezzo, it tells the story of the ancient origins of the city.

The route winds through26 rooms on two floors: on the ground floor we find the finds that retracethe history of Arezzo from its foundation in the Etruscan Age to the Late Antiquity.On the upper floor we find the special sections of paleontology, prehistory and early Middle Ages together with the thematic ones with ceramics and bronzes.

The Archaeological Museum of Arezzo is a must-see for its beautiful collection ofEtruscan jewelsfound in the city necropolis of Poggio del Sole, for a gigantic decoration of an ancient pediment of a building depicting combat scenes, found in today's Piazza San Jacopo, together with the finds from the grandioseSanctuary of Castelsecco: decorative slabs, a stone altar and votive statuettes of swaddled children.

Two rarities make it unique: the richest collection in the world of Arezzo sealed earth vases, called“coral vases”, produced in Arezzo between the middle of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 1st century AD which made Arezzo famous throughout antiquity and a very rareEuphronios Crater from 500 BC. which depicts the fight between Greeks and Amazons and on the warriors' shield bears what would become the symbol of the city:the Chimera.
